Old Rockers Never Die

Twitter brought Dallas Taylor back to many of us this past week. For those who remember the name but not the details, Dallas joined Crosby, Stills and Nash (CSN) for their second album, Deja Vu in 1970 and also backed up Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (CSN&Y). In 1971, Taylor and Stills trasitioned to the band Manassas (see and hear following the Taylor interview below). If you are an album credit fanatic like me, you will find Taylor's name listed on a number of albums from the '70s.

Here's where he went. Heroin ruined his career. He has been clean for 23 years and now works as a drug interventionist. He recently released shared a podcast with Twitter followers that includes a dozen newer songs. You can follow him on Twitter at @DallasWTaylor.

Check out the classic photos below from his interventionist web site, and then watch the interview. credited to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smIML1O-A6s. For more Dallas Taylor music, go to http://www.dallastaylorband.com/,

In 1971, CSN&Y drummer Dallas Taylor and Stephen Stills hooked up with singer/guitarist Chris Hilman, steel pedal guitarist Al Perkins, percussionist Joe Lala, bassist Fuzzy Samuels and Paul Harris on Keyboards to form Manassas. Here they perform It Doesn't Matter (1972).

Fridays and Weekends Rock with Australian Pink Floyd

Tomorrow, I will be among those lucky enough to attend the Australian Pink Floyd concert in Hartford. For those of you who have never heard of them all you need know is that they are the only Pink Floyd cover band to be endorsed by Roger Waters, original member, bass and vocals, and David Glamor, guitar and vocals, Pink Floyd. Rock on!

Fridays and Weekend Rock with Traffic

If you wonder why we Boomers were mellow in the '60s and early '70s, much of it had to do with the music; the rest had to do with vegetation from Jamaica, Mexico and northern California and stuff made up in someone's kitchen. Traffic's early phase is described as winsomely psychedelic that blended blues, folk, rock and R&B.

In 1970, with a number of personnel changes, the band transitioned to progressive FM rock. When Traffic formed in 1967, Steve Winwood was on vocals, keyboards (a Hammond B3) and guitar; Chris Wood on sax and flute; Dave Mason, guitar and vocals; and Jim Capaldi on drums. Each of these musicians went on to successful careers, both solo and with other bands.

Conflicts between Winwood's jazz style and Mason's pop leanings caused Mason to leave that same year. In 1969, Winwood joined Blind Faith, apparently ending the short life of Traffic. However, Blind Faith was short-lived, and after a short stint with Ginger Baker's Air Force, Winwood's solo album, which included Capaldi and Wood, Traffic was reborn. However, the second coming proved short, as well, and Winwood went on to a successful solo career.

Fridays and Weekends Rock with The Moody Blues

My wife and I sat 10 rows back center left four weeks ago to watch and party to one of the greatest British bands ever. The Moody Blues are graying but the music remains powerful.

Formed in Birmingham, England, in 1964, the band is best known as among the first classical-pomp groups. Intact since 1967, the band is: Justin Hayward, guitar and vocals; John Lodge, bass and vocals; Graeme Edge, drums; and Ray Thomas, flute and vocals. The Moody Blues continue to pack arenas throughout North America and Europe. Rock on!

Fridays and Weekends Rock with Emerson, Lake and Palmer

In 1970, three of Rock's best musicians joined forces to introduce a new genre critics called classical-flavored progressive rock. The group came about because Keith Emerson, keyboards, (Nice) jammed with Greg Lake, bass and vocals, (King Crimson) in 1969 at Fillmore West, when both were in San Francisco touring with their bands. About a year later, drummer Carl Palmer from Atomic Rooster completed the trio.

They debuted on August 25 and on August 29 appeared at the Isle of Wright Festival, playing the hell out of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. From that appearance they went on to record nine consecutive Gold Albums.

I had the pleasure of seeing them in 1978 in Milwaukee to a sold-out arena of some 12,000 fans. So as I remember the symphony orchestra accompanying the band on this tour playing the opening to Pictures at an Exhibition, while fog filled the stage and the band rose from the depths beneath it, rock on!

Fridays and Weekends Rock with Pearl Jam

I was in Seattle when word began spreading about a hot band called Pearl Jam. Never one to miss checking out a new band when the reports says they will rock your soul, I went to see for myself. Like thousands of others I reveled in new hope that rock lived on. Anyway, without further talk from me, Pearl Jam is what rock and roll is about: rebellion, guitars, vocals, disturbing lyrics, and a marketing strategy that ignores the masses but reaches out to those who care most about the genre. This ain't Pop, my friends. Rock on!

Fridays and Weekends Rock with Nirvana

I am deviating from my normally scheduled band, which was to be Spirit, and moving Nirvana up in its place. I lived in Seattle and watched Nirvana move out of the clubs and into the heart of the music world. I believe that move led to Kurt Cobain's suicide, which took place in a home a neighborhood away from my apartment. Angst killed him. And since I have experienced more than a little angst this week, I think Nirvana is the perfect choice for this post.

Fridays and Weekends Rock with King Crimson

King Crimson set the stage for what became known in the early '70s as British Art Rock, marked by lyrics, vocals and musical tones best described as eccentric, complex and dissonant. Formed in 1969, the original members featured Robert Fripp, guitar and Mellotron; Greg Lake, soon to become part of the super group--Emerson, Lake, and Palmer--on bass; Ian McDonald, keyboards, sax, flute and vocals; Michael Giles, drums; and Pete Sinfield, lyrics and light show.

Crimson debuted at the London Speakeasy on April 9, 1969, and on July 5 the group played before 650,000 at the Rolling Stones free Hyde Park concert. In October, the group's masterpiece, In the Court of the Crimson King, was released. The album signaled both a work of genius and musicianship as well as the beginning of an downward cycle of personnel changes. By 1974, the band's leader, Robert Fripp, tired of the art-rock movement, which was at its commercial peak, and he ended the band in October of that year.

The cuts below are long, as was typical of Crimson's music, a blend of classical and psychedelic, and intent on story-telling. Discover the art!

Fridays and Weekends Rock with Kiss

There's only one way to listen to this band--LOUD!

Formed in 1972 in New York City, the original members featured Gene Simmons, who was born in Israel, on bass and vocals; Paul Stanley, guitar and vocals; Peter Criss, drums and vocals; and Ace Frehley, guitar.

Their debut album in 1974 defined their band, Hotter Than Hell. Simmons fire-breathing, blood-dripping persona fit perfectly within the glitter and hard rock theater of the '80s. Critics hate them; fans love them. Crank It Up!

Fridays and Weekends Rock with Bonnie Raitt

Bonnie Raitt ranks with the best of blues rock. Born Nov. 8, 1949, in Burbank, Calif., she is the daughter of Broadway singer John Raitt. She began playing guitar at 12, but in 1967 she left home to enter Radcliffe. She dropped out to years later, and began playing the local folk and blues clubs. Soon she was performing with greats such as Howlin' Wolf, Sippie Wallace, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and her reputation in Boston and Philadelphia flourished.

It is easier to understand Raitt's contributions to benefits and causes such as No-Nukes, Musicians United for Safe Energy and peace and justice efforts when we know that she is a Quaker, committed to non-violence.

Here is a sampling of her music. Enjoy!
