Why is the Sky Blue?
Today, I start a new series that is just for fun and maybe a little learning as well. How many of us as we were growing up asked our moms and dads "Why is the sky blue?" Questions such as these terrify adults. Well, readers, don't worry. This series will attempt to answer these sorts of questions.
The blue color of the sky is due to the scattering wavelength light. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths such as red, orange and yellow light is affected. But shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light gets scattered around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.
