Why is the Sky Blue?

Today, I start a new series that is just for fun and maybe a little learning as well. How many of us as we were growing up asked our moms and dads "Why is the sky blue?" Questions such as these terrify adults. Well, readers, don't worry. This series will attempt to answer these sorts of questions.

The blue color of the sky is due to the scattering wavelength light. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths such as red, orange and yellow light is affected. But shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light gets scattered around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.

I've Been Book Tagged

Toby Bloomberg, The Diva Marketing Blog, "tagged" me in a virtual game/meme book tag. At the end of this post, check to see if you are it.

How many books do you own?
When we moved to Seattle in 1983, we moved several thousand books. Yikes, my aching back. Before more east 20 years later, we gave away several thousand books. Today, we estimate about 1,000 books line our shelves, 95% read.

What was the last book you read?
Re-Imagine by Tom Peters. I can't think of a business writer more capable of sparking great ideas within a business person.

What was the last book you purchased?
This is weird but just today I purchased 20 copies of my most recent book, Lead With Your Heart, to have available for my next presentation on what it means to be a leader who always puts people first.

What five books are most meaningful to you?
Difficult to say, but I'll go with these, in no particular order:

  1. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
  2. Built to Last
  3. Dune (the complete collection)
  4. Lord of the Rings (the complete collection)
  5. The Bear and the Dragon
  6. Bonus Selection: The Power of Positive Thinking

What is your most obscure favorite book?
I suspect it is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, also one of my favorites.

Tag You're It!

  1. John Moore
  2. Susan Bird
  3. Connie Bensen
  4. Stephen Denny
  5. Daniel Sitter

Taking A Bite Out of the Big Apple

Yesterday, my wife Kay and I trained into New York City. We are fortunate in that we live about half-way between Boston and New York, so visiting either city is a 90-minute train ride.

We arrived at 11:45 a.m., which is early for us, as we tend to be night people. After making our way up and out of the train station, we headed directly to our favorite Irish Pub in Times Square. And that was the beginng of the big blisters (on our feet). Eight hours later and six hours of walking, eating, drinking, boating, drinking, walking, drinking, walking, drinking and eating, we returned to Grand Central and home.

New friends were made, and new taverns and bistros recommended by those friends, where we made more new friends. Many lived in Manhattan, others were from California, Long Island, Ohio and Atlanta. It was a great day! Enjoy just a few images of the city.

Breaking the Rules Can Kill You

Have you ever had a friend, a family member or a boss that freaked out everytime anyone attempted something new, creative or innovative? Well, maybe he or she was right. Thinking out of the box can kill you.

This short was created by Toby, a University of Florida student. Check him out at http://www.myspace.com/tobyjoeturner or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuSm60fKboM. As a Gator alum, students such as Toby make me proud to be a UF grad.
